Your voice is how you give it meaning.

Tim Spicer is a speaker, facilitator, entrepreneur, and post-secondary education expert who has spent more than a decade helping people recognize their influence, navigate opportunity, and take ownership of what comes next.

But long before he taught those ideas, he had to learn them himself.

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA

He didn't find his strengths where he expected to.

Tim grew up with a lesson instilled in him early: your name is all you have.

How you carry yourself matters. How you treat people matters. What you choose to associate with your name matters.

But growing up, school didn't always come easily to Tim. Traditional measures of success didn't always reflect what he knew he was capable of becoming.

Then he found leadership.

He could connect with people. Bring them together. Communicate. Create energy. Serve. What began in middle school as a natural desire to get involved became the place where Tim started recognizing strengths that a grade couldn't always measure.

Leadership gave him more than something to put on a résumé.

It gave him a way to use his voice.

WAKEFIELD HIGH SCHOOL • 2009

A setback became fuel.

As a student at Wakefield High School, Tim hit an academic setback when a teacher challenged his writing and pushed him to do better.

Being reassigned wasn't the answer.

Tim decided to use the setback as constructive energy. He stayed focused, took ownership of the challenge, and succeeded in the advanced course.

Then, as Senior Class President in 2009, Tim was selected to introduce President Barack Obama during the President's Address to Students.

Standing before his classmates, and students watching across the country, Tim shared a lesson he was already beginning to understand:

“Excellent education opportunities may be handed to us, but as students we must take responsibility for our future.”

The moment was extraordinary. But the lesson behind it would prove even more important:

Opportunity can open the door. Ownership determines what you do once you're inside.

MOREHOUSE COLLEGE

Failure doesn't define you. It refines you.

When Tim arrived at Morehouse College, he thought he knew what he was doing.

Then he failed National Government, the first course in his Political Science major.

Not an exam. Not a presentation. The course.

Seeing that F forced Tim to confront something uncomfortable: what had worked in one environment wasn't necessarily going to work in the next.

And it forced him to ask a question:

“What am I here to achieve?”

The answer became bigger than recovering from one class.

Tim began reconnecting with why he was there, who he wanted to become, and what success actually required from him. Over time, ideas like servant leadership and Morehouse's call toward achievement deepened that sense of purpose.

Tim went on to earn his B.A. in Political Science from Morehouse College and later an M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from George Washington University.

But the lesson stayed with him:

Failure can be information. What matters is what you do next.

THE WORK

A career built in the space between access and success.

For more than a decade, Tim has worked with students, families, schools, colleges, foundations, and communities to help people navigate what happens after an opportunity becomes available.

ACCESS

Helping students and families understand pathways to college, financial aid, scholarships, vocational training, and post-secondary opportunity.

PERSISTENCE

Helping students develop the self-advocacy, executive functioning, relationships, planning, and resource awareness needed to keep moving toward completion.

LEADERSHIP

Helping people recognize the influence they already possess and use it intentionally to strengthen themselves and the communities around them.

His work has included guiding thousands of graduating seniors annually and supporting post-secondary initiatives across U.S. and international communities, including Bermuda.

SURVIVOR 46

Then came a very different classroom.

After years of helping students navigate uncertainty, setbacks, relationships, and change, Tim found himself testing those same ideas in a completely different environment: as a castaway on the 46th season of Survivor.

The setting changed.

The principles didn't.

Mental endurance mattered. Relationships mattered. Adaptability mattered. Community mattered. And failure was inevitable.

During one challenge, Tim stepped out of a boat and flipped the platform, more than once. He eventually untied the knot underwater, got back in the boat, and helped his tribe continue.

They didn't win.

But the experience reinforced something Tim already knew:

You're bound to fail just as many times as you're committed to trying. The goal is to keep moving.

Connection. Community.

Contribution.

On the TEDxEmory stage, Tim brought years of experience in education together with lessons from Morehouse, family, entrepreneurship, and Survivor to explore what it really takes to survive college, and what those lessons can teach us beyond it.

The framework came down to three ideas:

Connection begins with knowing yourself and reconnecting with why you're there.

Community reminds us that nobody succeeds alone.

Contribution asks what you'll do with what you've learned, accessed, and experienced.

For Tim, that's where leadership becomes bigger than individual success.

“This is hard work. But it is also heart work.”

Today, Tim helps students, emerging leaders, families, educators, and organizations become more intentional about what they already have the power to influence.

His work isn't about pretending obstacles don't exist.

It's about recognizing your strengths, using your voice, building meaningful relationships, activating available resources, and taking ownership of what comes next.

Because leadership doesn't begin with a title.

It begins with what you choose to do with your influence.
